Scotland win opening team badminton match

Scotland's mixed badminton team complete a 5-0 clean sweep over Seychelles in their opening pool-stage tie at the Commonwealth Games.

Scotland have begun their mixed team badminton campaign with a comfortable 5-0 win over the Seychelles at the Commonwealth Games this morning.

Scottish pairing Martin Campbell and Jillie Cooper needed just 22 minutes to wrap up victory against Juliette Ah-Wan and George Cupidon of the Seychelles.

The Seychelles made a strong start to the first game, but Scotland soon surged ahead, winning the opener 21-11.

Their dominance continued in the second as they cruised to a 21-5 win, taking just nine minutes to wrap up the second game.

Kieran Merrilees breezed past Kervin Ghislain 22-1 21-8 in the men's singles match, while Rebekka Findlay wrapped up a comfortable win in the women's singles against Allisen Camille in the third match, ensuring that Scotland would win the tie.

Knowing that they already had the win did not put off the men's and women's doubles pairings, as Martin Campbell and Patrick MacHugh dispatched Cupidon and Steve Malcouzanne, before Caitlin Pringle and Imogen Bankier completed the clean sweep.

The host nation also face New Zealand and Guernsey in the pool stage of the competition.
