David Oliver: 'Justin Gatlin does not deserve criticism'

David Oliver claims that he is fully behind Justin Gatlin as the sprinter continues to face questions about his doping past heading into the 100m in Beijing.

American hurdler David Oliver has claimed that Justin Gatlin does not deserve the criticism he has faced ahead of the World Athletics Championships.

Gatlin heads into the 100m as the main challenger to Usain Bolt's title, and much of the build-up has focused on the American's two bans for doping violations.

However, Oliver believes that his teammate has often been harshly treated by the media in a year which has seen him produce the best times of his career.

"He's just doing his job and he's back running fast and I'm happy for him," the 110m hurdles world champion told reporters. "That's a you problem.

"You all just keep bringing it up and focusing on that, and there are tons of great athletes representing Team USA who warrant the same type of attention. I'm rooting for him and I'm happy he's doing well."

Gatlin finished second behind Bolt in Moscow two years ago.
