Mo Farah has revealed that his recent Twitter dispute with fellow Great Britain athlete Andy Vernon spurred him on to break the first world record of his career.
The double Olympic champion set a time of 8:03.40 over two miles at yesterday's Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham to beat Kenenisa Bekele's previous best time of 8:04.34.
It came just days after Somali-born Farah's nationality had been questioned by Vernon, which the 31-year-old insists pushed him on to victory.
"It inspired me," he is quoted as saying by The Guardian. "Whatever's happened has happened, we've got to move on, but at the same time I'm an athlete; that's what I do best."
The race was Farah's first of the 2015 season.
