The 21-year-old clocked a winning time of 13:12.07 to become his nation's second champion in Glasgow following Flomena Cheyech Daniel's triumph in the women's marathon earlier.

It was twins Zane and Jake Robertson who set the pace for much of the contest, but the New Zealand duo could not sustain their challenge - although the latter did hold out for bronze to deny Kenya a clean sweep.

Ndiku and Koech have brought Kenya's medal haul to five in total - two gold and three silver.
