Kirani James, Martyn Rooney dominate 400m semi-finals

Olympic champion Kirani James and Martyn Rooney ease into the final of the 400m at the Commonwealth Games.

Olympic champion Kirani James and England's Martyn Rooney produced dominant displays in their respective semi-finals to reach the 400m final at the Commonwealth Games this evening.

Rooney ran alongside his closest rivals for the first half of the opening semi-final, before cruising away in the second 200m to earn breathing space and allow himself to slow down prior to crossing the finish line 45.22s ahead of Jarrin Solomon and Chris Brown.

It was also a relatively easy evening for James as the Grenadian cruised home in a time of 45.14s, with South Africa's South Africa's Wayde van Niekerk claiming the second automatic qualifying spot in the second semi-final.

Olympic bronze medallist Lalonde Gordon finished strongly in the final race to edge out Latoy Williams of the Bahamas, and there was a shock as Isaac Makwala missed out on a spot in the final after failing to secure qualification as a fastest loser.
