New York Jets confirm new GM and head coach

Owner Woody Johnson opts for Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan as he attempts to replace the recently-fired pairing of Rex Ryan and John Idzik at the New York Jets.

The New York Jets have announced the double arrival of Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan as head coach and general manager respectively.

Former Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Bowles comes in as Rex Ryan's replacement, while Maccagnan swaps a personnel role with the Houston Texans to step into John Idzik's old shoes.

Ryan and Idzik were fired by the Jets following the end of the regular season, and the franchise have moved quickly to recruit their successors.

On the hiring of Maccagnan, team owner Woody Johnson said: "We interviewed a number of impressive, qualified candidates, but Mike Maccagnan clearly stood out for our GM role.

"His attention to detail, strong personnel background and collaborative approach to evaluating players made it clear that he is the right choice to be the next general manager of the New York Jets."

NFL analyst Ian Rapoport has suggested that Maccagnan will have the final say over roster moves, while Bowles will decide on the 46-man roster and who plays each week.

He also confirmed that the contract that has been negotiated for Bowles stands at $16m (£10.5m) across the next four years.
