John Dorsey says that a good quarterback is key to long-term success at a NFL franchise.

John Dorsey has said that having the right quarterback is very important for the long-term success of a team.

The new general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs will have the first pick in the 2013 Draft, with quarterbacks being selected first for the last four years.

Dorsey told reporters: "I think anytime when you begin to build a franchise, let's be real here, the quarterback is a very important part of any franchise as you note these last few weeks in the playoffs.

"I figure the quarterback position is a very important position to long-term success of an organisation.

"Pick the best available player. I haven't had time yet to sit together as a staff, sit with [head coach Andy Reid] and get his understanding and makeup. He is still trying to put a coaching staff together. I'm just trying to get used to the personnel staff here and just be able to take business as usual forward."

Brady Quinn played in 10 games as quarterback for the Chiefs in the 2012 season, throwing just two touchdown passes and eight interceptions, while Matt Cassel had six touchdowns and 12 interceptions in nine games.

Dorsey was appointed following Scott Pioli's departure earlier this month.
