Chris Houston departs from Detroit Lions following toe operation

Cornerback Chris Houston is released from his contract with the Detroit Lions, with the player now recovering from toe surgery without an NFL team.

The Detroit Lions have announced that cornerback Chris Houston has left the team, with the player having been released from his contract.

Houston had been hotly tipped to become one of the most efficient cornerbacks in recent years, but a number of injuries prevented the player from kicking on from impressive performances between 2010 and 2012.

Such was the faith shown in him by Detroit, the team provided the cover man with a $25m (£14.7m) contract last off-season.

However, the team has now released the player following a toe operation, allowing him to continue his rehabilitation away from Detroit.
