Ameer Abdullah eyeing three-down role with Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah outlines his desire to become the club's back on all three downs in his rookie season in the NFL.

Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah has revealed that he is confident that he can become a three-down player for the club in his rookie season.

The Lions selected Abdullah in the second round of the 2015 Draft after they took the decision to release veteran back Reggie Bush, bringing an end to his underwhelming two years with the club.

The 22-year-old has outlined his ambition to better Bush's production in the Lions' backfield in his rookie season at the club as an all-round back.

When asked if he could play all three downs, Abdullah told NFL Network: "Most definitely. I came into this league hoping to get the opportunity to play running back on every down.

"I full-heartedly believe that is what my calling is. That is what I'm supposed to do. So I'm looking forward to it.

"That's what I've done my whole life. I haven't done anything else, so I don't see why I wouldn't be confident in my game. I know my teammates trust me in such a short time to do so. I trust myself."

Abdullah signed a four-year deal with the Lions in May.
