Cam Newton released from hospital following car crash

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton leaves hospital with slight fractures to his back following a collision in his car.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has been released from hospital following a car accident that he was involved in on Tuesday.

Newton was taken to hospital as a precaution after the incident in Charlotte, with the team confirming via their website that he had sustained injuries to his back.

The Panthers reavealed that the 2011 Draft first-pick had two fractures to his back, although making an appearance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this weekend is not out of the question.

The 25-year-old is said to be in good spirits, with the Panthers confirming that he is currently recuperating with his family.

Newton's injury is similar to one that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo sustained last season, causing the signal-caller to miss one game.

Carolina still harbour hopes of reaching the playoffs, having beaten divisional rivals the New Orleans Saints last Sunday.
